The Importance of Sleep

Sleep is a necessary human function which allows our brains to recharge and our bodies rest.  While we are having the contracted withdrawals our bodies are under stress and we don’t receive the full benefits of sleep such as muscle repair and memory consolidation.

I have been experiencing forgetfulness, even forgetting how to spell words.  The muscle pain I have due to hip arthritis is sometimes worsened.  When I don’t get enough sleep I try to have a nap which doesn’t affect my ability go fall asleep at night.


Melatonin is a hormone which is secreted by the Pineal gland.  The supplement Melatonin is an effective natural sleep aid.  It can help reduce the amount of time it takes to fall asleep.  One study shows that 3 mg. taken 30 minutes before bedtime significantly increases the amount of time spent in REM sleep.  I began taking Melatonin two nights ago and have been sleeping almost through the night.
